A Man Who I Did Not Know

Today I shed tears for a man who I did not know, a man who led a simple life, hopeful for a change, a man who called for peace in the face of that change and who asked for hearts not to be hardened and bitter, but open and understanding.

Today I mourned the loss of a man who I did not know, from a world who needs him, and many more like him so desperately. A man who nearly lost his life on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in hopes for voting rights for all men.

A man who I did not know marched with Dr. Martin Luther King for equality. Equality that simply should have been common practice from the beginning. Peacefully marching for rights that should always have been theirs.

A man who I did not know was refused a library card as a young man, which ignited a spark inside of him that was never doused by the cruelty and injustice of the world.

May this man who I did not know rest in peace and may his legacy live on and may it guide the world to always remember and emulate this man who I did not know.

Rest peacefully Congressman John Robert Lewis.
